TheAllKnower - Dude, eat nothing but raw vegetables and water, organic fresh vegetables for every meal, you'll go kinda hungry but your body will eat the cancer off you. If you actually have cancer. there's no reason not to try my theory.
It is probably edema, or your body retaining fluid, usually as a defense response to the trauma your body is going through trying to fight off the chemo.
You will lose the weight. Stay the course. Follow dietary instructions from your doctors ONLY! Don't rely on Yahoo. right? ;)
SilverLynx - It's better to GAIN than lose weight from chemo. Your body is going to be burning through it's stores to try and keep up with the radiation.
Eat the foods recommended by your doctor or doctor-assigned dietitian, and don't worry if you put on a few pounds.
If it's not fluid retention (which is fine!), it might be that depending on the type of cancer you had you were underweight and your body is only just now beginning to recover.
Do not follow any links or guides for food from this forum - people have a lot of wacky ideas, and that can hurt you in the long run. Follow what your doctors tell you!
To calm you a little: My brother (who is 6'1") dropped to a horrifying 110 pounds before being diagnosed with cancer - and though the chemo made him sick, a strong change in diet allowed him to gain back his weight to a healthy level. He listened to his doctors, bought the food he was supposed to, ate when and how they told him to - and it helped him recover. Even 3 months later he was looking better, even though he was still in the middle of chemo, and still taking tons of pain meds. Eat yourself healthy right now. Worry about tone after your go into remission - and when you do, make sure you're doing it RIGHT.
april - Steroids caused me to blow up like a balloon. I lost most of it after they were done, but only lost a little during the course of chemo, even when everything tasted so gross, I couldn't eat. You will probably even out but don't try to lose weight. I know of no one that's had dietary restrictions or instructions to follow during chemo, so eat what you want.

thinkingtime - I caught heck from the doctors for losing weight during chemo. I've lost about 15 lbs since surgery, most after radiation.

ReplyDeletepeggy b - The reason you have weight gain is because steroids are usually given with chemo and makes you retain fluids
