Don't say it's just a little prick if it's not, what's it like? I'm absolutely terrified for when I do have to have one! Anything that could distract me?
Kathleen - Oh come ON!!! They use tiny little needles. Life consists of these little challenges. There are far more important things to worry about than this.
Lucy - I don't know if you mean blood tests you have at the doctors or the ones you do youself with a meter. Neither are particularly painful, but it's more uncomfortable if you wind yourself up about it. Either way it's over in a second.
Jeff 001 - It is small puncture, very sharp needle, so not like a nail going in, I've given blood, you will be there for 5 seconds at most, be brave :)
Little - It helps to have a friend or someone there with you to talk to you when you get it done if you are that terrified. As for me I watch them stick the needle in and watch everything. But for you I would say try taking someone in there with you and talkin to them while they draw the blood. If you do that you won't feel a thing. when I get blood drawn it feels like when you step on a sticker
Katherine - You have never had a blood test before?
Wow, how old are you?
Honestly, do not panic! If you are having an ordinary blood test (not an arterial one), it will be much less painful. Of course a blood test is not painless. For myself, I find it like a sharp scratch and then a bit of a pain afterwards, but my advice would be to take deep breaths, and not look at the needle at all. Focus your eyes straight in front of you, and focus on something like counting numbers (maybe your 3x table in your head) or the alphabet backwards in your head to distract you and make you focus on something else.
It is so quick and will be over before you know it. Also, make sure you are well-hydrated before your blood test because it will be a lot easier to get to your vein on the first attempt.
David in Lancs - Your blood for your initial tests will be taken by nurses who do this all day and every day. Rather a nurse than a doctor ! I have been know to say that I am ready only to find the nurse sticking the plaster on already. Don't look if needles bother you. If you are diabetic, you will need to test your own blood sugar. There is a cunning little gadget that does this and you get so that you barely feel it.
It's not a matter of bravery, I scream when I cut my nails.
Effie - Its just a little pinch, i know you might be nervous, but when i was younger the doctors had to hold me down because i was so afraid, but i learned to get used to it, its just a pinch, a bit of throbbing, then they take it out and your done.

ReplyDeleteKhadeejah Fahoum - they don't , it is easy , and it goes quick , and you should relax while you do it

ReplyDeleteInsane_mad_maniak - it's just like someone giving you a hard pinch.
ReplyDeletethe worst part i find is after the needle goes in because it feels real strange.
if your scared of needles, or dont want the pain, you can get a topical numbing cream.

Good luck!
L - I've had numerous blood tests through the years it varies from nothing to a hard pinch it all depends on how good the nurse is
