What Is A Echo-cardiogram?

I have received a letter from the cardiologist today. saying i have to go for a echo-cardiogram.
Can anyone tell me what this is? Does it hurt? what does it include?

I was referred to the cardiologist when i started experiencing my heart was racing very quick causing chest pains,The doctor diagnosed me with a hurt murmur and said i need this test.

  1. emandgee - It is totally pain free and involves your heart being scanned. Basically the doctor will use a handheld device that they pass over the chest and the images appear on a monitor. It gives a clearer picture of whether there is a problem with the heart. It is the same process used when you go for a scan of an unborn baby.

  4. starlight - its a scan of your heart it doesnt hurt and takes a few mins, you will not get told results at the time you will get appointment to see cardiologist
