Maverick - Does it have a red ring in the middle? If so then this is more than likely a brown recluse spider bite. If so you need to get to the doctor before the skin starts rotting away. It will itch swell and puss up then get much worse from there
ReplyDeleteformerly_bob - An infection that itches might be shingles (same virus that causes chicken pox) or a strep infection. Medication doesn't help with shingles - it just has to run its course. Strep should respond to alcohol, but it only works on bacteria that come into direct contact with the alcohol. If the infection forms a crust or scab, the alcohol won't reach the bacteria underneath. If the infection is crusty, you need to soak it in soapy water and try to dissolve the crust or scab before applying an antiseptic or antibiotic. Povidone iodine is better than alcohol. It might be a good idea to go back to the doc. If the infection is strep, you might have the type that is resistant to antibiotics, and if so, its important to get it under control as soon as possible.
