I don't have cancer but i know a person who does. She didn't go bald though.I know she is going through chemo. So is it optional to shave your head if you get cancer.I also know some people shave their heads even though they don't have cancer for wigs for kids and stuff like that but how do you sign up for it?But can you give me some more background on cancer and chemo?
KMcG - It is not optional, some people lose their hair due to chemo and some do not. People who donate hair do so through an organization called Locks of Love. Call a salon up and ask if they participate in the program, many salons do.
ReplyDeleteShirley C Bongbong - People with cancer go bald because of the result or side effects of the chemotherapy and other strong medicines. No there is no excuse for it. It is not optional.
ReplyDeleteNormally, your cells grow and die in a controlled way. Cancer cells keep forming without control. Chemotherapy is drug therapy that can kill these cells or stop them from multiplying. However, it can also harm healthy cells, which causes side effects.
During chemotherapy you may have no side effects or just a few. The kinds of side effects you have depend on the type and dose of chemotherapy you get. Side effects vary, but common ones are nausea, vomiting, tiredness, pain and hair loss. Healthy cells usually recover after chemotherapy, so most side effects gradually go away.
Your course of therapy will depend on the cancer type, the chemotherapy drugs used, the treatment goal and how your body responds. You may get treatment every day, every week or every month. You may have breaks between treatments so that your body has a chance to build new healthy cells. You might take the drugs by mouth, in a shot or intravenously.
Memere RN/BA - People will shave their heads in support for the cancer patient. It makes the patient feel like part of a group. I admire those who do this. My brother never lost his hair while going through chemo. It depends on the type of chemo/radiation that will determine hair loss. I donated 36 inches of my hair because there is so much cancer in our family. If you want information on cancer and chemo, it's just a click away. Cancer is a blanket word for over 200 different types of cancer. As far as options, there is the one where friends and supporters will shave their heads for a cancer patient. Other than that, some will loose hair because of chemo and others will not. There are multiple types of chemo. Hope this helps
ReplyDeleteGot Pomchi? - Some drugs are more likely to cause it than others, and there's something called a "cold cap" that patients can sometimes wear while undergoing treatment to prevent the hair loss, but it's sometimes inevitable. It doesn't have to be a terrible thing though-we have a family member that currently has no hair due to treatment but as she says, she rocks it! And she does-it's all about attitude!
ReplyDeleteChemoAngel - Optional? Yes and No. It all depends on the type of chemo meds that she is given. Not everyone goes bald from them. The doctors would have discussed the side effects with her. "Locks for Love" is done by many salons, you can find out if one of your hair salons are doing it. You hair needs to be a certain length before they will cut it.
