16 seconds in - The second figure may determine that the heart is workign a little harder that it should but not a lot. I hope this isn't one of these self-diagnosis blood pressure machine she is using. She could need a proper examination , seek an appointment with the doctor , only they know what's best. 57 isn't old at all...I would get a check up.
Michael - Yes your blood pressure is high if the large number is consistently over 140 and the lower number is above 90, please see a doctor and don't take any chances with your health. I was just diagnosed with high blood pressure 3 months ago the doctor put me on medication and now my headaches are gone and the constant neck aches. High blood pressure is often called silent killer so again don't take any chances. Good luck.
Mamie - If a (UK) blood pressure is the same as a (US) blood pressure -- and I think it is -- then it's too high. You're not likely to die tomorrow, but get to a doctor and get examined and treated as soon as you can.
hasse_john - yes, it is too high. she should give blood, and go on a regime to thin the blood. Garlic, Gingko, Natto, etc. and she should give blood, and work to relax her peripheral vasculature, stop smoking, give up Caffeine, and supplement L-Arginine. Avoid drugs, for while they change the numbers, they do not promote life and health. She should also increase real unrefined salt in her diet, and drink more water. (Assuming she does not have seriously impaired kidney function)
gangadharan nair - The patient has stage 1 hypertension (Mild). Her blood pressure reading is 156/95 mmHg. Pulse pressure is 156--95 = 61 mmHg. Optimum pulse pressure is 40 mmHg. A high pulse pressure may be a strong predictor of heart problems, especially for older adults. Generally, a pulse pressure greater than 40 mm Hg is abnormal. Her blood pressure may be controlled by diet, exercise and medications. Adopt DASH diet (Mediterranean diet). Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet, which includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish, vegetables, poultry, and egg whites. Use monounsaturated oils such as olive, peanut, and canola oils or polyunsaturated oils such as corn, safflower, soy, sunflower, cottonseed, and soybean oils. Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
