so i got an echo done a few weeks ago and it came back that i have regurgitation in 3 valves. so i go back to the cardiologist and they tell me it's nothing to worry about. i also have high blood pressure and heart rate, so i am on athenol for that. but what i don't understand is if it's nothing to worry about why does my chest hurt all the time? like there's an elephant sitting on my chest and coming up in my throat? i had to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours about 2 weeks ago and i go back soon, but it just doesn't make any sense. i'm only 17, i shouldn't have health problems like this!
DocP - There are other things that can cause chest pain other than your heart. Obviously it is most important to have your heart evaluated, which it sounds like you are doing, since a problem with that can kill you. One thing that commonly causes chest pain and makes people feel like they are having a heart attack would be acid reflux. It causes a burning, and sometimes pressure feeling in the middle of your chest, tends to be worse after meals and laying down, and can be associated with bloating, belching, and indigestion. Pain from a blocked artery in your heart, on the other hand, would generally not be present at rest, but would get worse as you exert yourself. If you feel like you having some of the reflux symptoms, try some OTC Prilosec for about 2 weeks and see if you don't feel better. Let your family doctor know if you don't and they can prescribe stronger medicine. There are also certain foods that can make it worse, I'd recommend a quick google search. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteNancy - Hello Lindsey,
ReplyDeleteIf you have already been confirmed to have regurgitation in 3 valves, I find it unlikely that you have acid reflux, unless you have the specific symptoms of that problem. I think you have a legitimate concern though I would agree that excessive worrying is not helpful. I am not a cardiologist, but it doesn't take much to figure out that chest pain is consistent with a heavy workload to the heart. It sounds like you have been on the right track in addressing your problem. That being said, I would respectfully submit that you are entitled to have all your questions answered and explained in a manner in which you can understand. Don't let anyone brush you off. Be consistent, write down any questions you have so that you can ask them in an organized manner when you have your check-ups. If you don't get a straight response, you are well within your rights to find a new doctor and get a second opinion.
Good luck. I hope you have smooth sailing.
