Janie - It is probably just palpitations, these can make you feel like it is skipping a beat but it is really just two beats in quick succession which makes it feel longer until the next one. Have you been drinking a lot of caffeine? Or are you feeling anxious about something? Try to relax and cut out coffee and soft drinks to see if this helps.
Of course, if you are also suffering from breathlessness, a crushing pain in your chest, pain radiating down your arm, feel clammy, have pain between your shoulder blades, neck or in your jaw, or heartburn then dial 999 as these could indicate a heart attack.
lil green bear - Try not to worry. It could just be that you're having an anxiety or panic attack. Anaemia also makes you feel the heart beats loud in the chest. But-- If you go blue or suffer from breathing problems or pains in the arm and shoulder, then it could be a potential emergency.
