I am 14 years old and for the past few months I have been bloated all the time. I eat a bit of dairy every day, just not a ton. I figured it may be some food intolerance but I decided to wait and see what happened. Today I had a lot of dairy products (I know it's a lot of junk, but I was making Christmas cookies and stuff): sugar cookie dough, sugar cookies, frosting (from the can), frosting (mixed powdered sugar and milk), milk, ice cream with chocolate sauce, homemade mac and cheese (with real cheese and milk in it). Now I am bloated, feel sick, am gassy, and am having diarrhea. I wasn't lactose intolerant when I was little, but I wasn't sure if you could develop it as you got older. Normally I eat pretty healthy with no more dairy a day than some cheese on my pasta or a few sips of milk. Sorry for all the gross details and thanks for the
help! -Juli :)
hihihih - it could just be from all the junk food & the cookie dough (especially if it has raw eggs in it, that always gives me stomach aches). you could try cutting dairy out of your diet for a little to see if that makes you feel any better & if it does its possible you are lactose intolerant. You can always go to the doctor and get tested for it too.
ReplyDeleteMorgan - Yes, it is possible. I am 15, and I just became lactose intolerant last year. I had many of the symptoms you are describing.
ReplyDeleteStupid Name - A lot of people are lactose intolerant to a degree. As we age, some people who could eat dairy tend to notice problems.
ReplyDeleteGas and bloating are one lesser symptom, if not annoying. Diarrhea, throwing up and stomach pains are another. Swelling in the throat and rectal bleeding are the more highly sensitive lactose reactions.
To test: go a day without dairy. No butter, milk or cheese. Then the next day take (on an empty stomach) an 8 oz glass of milk and wait for 15 - 30 mins. If nothing happens take another 8 oz glass. Take not about anything that happens within four hours of the first drink. If you have any reactions see your doctor. They will administer a Lactose tolerance test (blood), Hydrogen breath test or a stool acidity test to make sure.
Lactose tolerance is a reaction that your intestines have with milk or anything with lactose. They can not brake down the 'lactose' in dairy (which is a sugar). Your body just doesn't make or have enough of the enzyme to get ride of it properly. It sucks at first, if you do have it. You may also just be lactose sensitive.
Where you can have dairy sometimes, just not huge quantities. Like pizza one day and no milk for the next few.
Good luck! There are a lot of alternatives and special products for lactose intolerant people. Almond milk, soy, rice and even processed milk that removes the lactose- are all versions of products that are made to help us lactose people out.
