Glucophage Xr Side Effects?

396545384 I was recently put on glucophage xr for diabetes and I was wondering if anyone has had any side effects of this medication. I have been having some strange effects like one day I am super energized and the next I am drowsy and all I want to do is sleep all day. Has any one else who has been or is on this pill had similar side effects? Thank you!

  1. David A - Low blood sugars can make you weak and drowsy. Check your sugars 3 times a day.

  2. Anna E - Low blood sugar can make you feel tired and sleepy. While Glucophage (metformin) usually does not cause a low blood sugar, it has happened to me a couple of times. When you feel like this you need to be sure and check your blood sugar. This medication can also cause stomach distress and diarrhea, but doesn't in everyone.

  3. TheOrange Evil - Everyone here is saying "low blood sugar," and while that may be true, it's possible that your blood sugar is just low for you. By that, I mean your body is used to much higher levels, so lower levels, even if they're not hypoglycemic, may FEEL hypoglycemic. This happened to me right after I was diagnosed. My blood sugar had been running in the 300s and 150 felt hypoglycemic to me. Faux hypoglycemia can make you feel tired - your body has less glucose and glucose is energy.

Are you testing your blood sugar? If this is blood sugar related, just know that the symptoms will subside after a while simply because you will acclimate to lower, healthier levels.
