Endocrinology Question About Ogtt Results?

396545384 Hi,
I am a 33 yo female who was diagnosed with hypoglycemia about 10 years ago. Recently, I have been having erratic (high and low blood sugars). I had an OGTT test 2 weeks ago and the results came back within the normal range (fasting: 66, 60 min: 117; 90 min: 128; 120 min: 107mg/dL-all in normal ref. range). My fasting insulin was 5 uIU/mL and my A1c was 5.1. My triglycerides are 299 mg/dl. The doctor won't return my calls and I was wondering if the numbers for the OGTT can fall in the normal range but the pattern of the response (response curve) can still be abnormal? Is this the case with my #s? I just want to know if I should push my doctor for answers or if these results mean everything is ok.
Thanks so much,
-D

  1. Purna - OGTT test results indicate the presence of higher or lower than normal levels of glucose in the blood. For an OGTT test procedure, the patient is .thank you.

  2. Li - An OGTT with GH levels looks to see if your body is making too much of a hormone called growth hormone (GH). A hormone is a chemical which is made in one part of the body but passes into the bloodstream and has effects on other parts of the body. GH is produced by your pituitary gland (a small gland that lies just under the brain.) GH has important effects on growth in childhood and influences adult body composition and the functioning of several body systems. Overproduction of GH in adulthood is called acromegaly.

Measuring a single level of GH is not helpful as the body produces GH in pulses. GH tends to increase blood sugar and conversely, when things are working normally, a fixed dose of sugar by mouth lowers GH to undetectable levels. In acromegaly, the GH levels remain high (or may even increase) after a dose of sugar by mouth. This test looks at what happens to both your blood sugar levels and growth hormone levels after drinking a sugar solution.

  3. micksmixxx - I'm not sure what it is you're questioning about your OGTT, my friend. The results are absolutely 'normal' for a non-diabetic ... even the response curve is absolutely normal.

After you drank the glucola ... the sickly sweet glucose drink ... it is normal for blood glucose levels to rise, up to a period of approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours. This is because it takes a little while for the glucose to be absorbed through the walls of the intestines into the bloodstream.

Having taken in the glucose, the beta cells (islets of Langerhans) of your pancreas would produce insulin, specifically to allow the glucose to be 'transported' into your body's cells, where it is used to create energy.

  4. John W - Your fasting reading is low ( shouldn't be less than 72 mg/dl ), that's probably your hypoglycemia showing. The response curve is just fine. Your trigycerides are high. You can book an appointment with your Doctor to discuss the test results, they like being paid for their time.
