I'm not over weight and haven't gained any weight but they are the only two symptoms I don't have. Usually I wouldn't be worried but my dad and my dads mum as well as my mums dad all have type 2 diabetes so its on both sides of the family and there is a great risk of me getting it even at such a young age.
Should I be concerned enough to ask my mum to bring me for a blood sugar test?
moviebuff - See a doctor and have the test
ReplyDeleteLearnOnly.com - your symptoms are suggstive of diabetis but type 2 at such age very unlikely. dont get panic if you are feeling thristy it does not meen that you have diabetius
ReplyDeletethere is nothing wrong in getting blood sugar as it rules out the possibilty. go ahead ask your mom to get blood suagar as it is not a big test

One - I doubt you have type 2 Diabetes, type 2 Diabetes is caused by being over weight or if your around over 60.
ReplyDeleteMiks - Well, the fact that so many of your family members have diabetes certainly raises some red flags because type 2 diabetes has a very strong genetic link. The symptoms that you mentioned ae all some of the common diabetes symptoms, so I would say there is a chance that you might have the disease. However, you are still very young and don't have any weight problems, so maybe you don't actually have it.
ReplyDeleteI know that this is the most basic advice that anyone could give but I will still say it - the best thing to do would be to see the doctor because he is the only person who will be able to answer all of your questions. If you have diabetes then you have it - there is nothing you can do about it. Just take your time and visit your doctor whenever you are ready.
Nana Lamb - You are wise to want to be healthy as possible. Yes, you need to have blood work done at minimum every year.
ReplyDeleteBut it isn't the weight gain you need to worry about, it is unexplained weight loss!!
Favored urban myth here on Y!A is that only those who are overweight and sofa spuds get diabetes!! It is totally false! Just as many normal weight or underweight people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as overweight people. And just as many young people are being diagnosed as grandmothers and grandfathers!! It has no respect for anyone if you have the genes to get it.
John W - Well vision problems usually happen after years of high glucose levels. Children usually get type 1 diabetes and after a serious illness as it's an auto-immune response. Although being over weight is a contributing factor to type 2 diabetes, weight loss is the result of uncontrolled diabetes. Dizziness and hunger are usually from low glucose levels which is a result of too much diabetes medication or insulin so it's usually not a symptom of undiagnosed diabetes unless you've been taking somebody else's medication or insulin. The only symptom that you've mentioned that might be from undiagnosed diabetes is the thirst, urinating and fatigue. Most of the symptoms that you have described would actually suggest the vasovagal response to possibly unnoticed fear, anxiety, and or stress.
ReplyDeleteIf your parents are diabetic, then they should have a glucose meter and can quickly test you for diabetes. A fasting test of 7 mmol/L ( 126 mg/dl ) or higher would be diabetic, normal fasting would be 4 mmol/L ( 72 mg/dl ) to 6 mmol/L ( 110 mg/dl, actually 6 mmol/L is 108 mg/dl ) and a non-diabetic should actually be 5.5 mmol/L ( 99 mg/dl ) or under. The two hour after a meal ( postprandal test ) would be diabetic if 11.1 mmol/L ( 200 mg/dl ) or over, normal if less than 7.8 mmol/L ( 140 mg/dl ). Wikipedia has a chart of these on their description of the Glucose Tolerance test and a good description of the test. You would still need to see a Doctor for a diagnosis but a quick test could put you fears to rest.
