I'm only 13 years old, and a while back i felt a lump in my right breast. It is the same size, but it hurts. Both my breasts have always been i guess what you cold call tender or something, but it really hurts. I am scared out of my whits, and I am even more afraid of either telling my mom or telling a doctor for what they might say. I am so scared!!!!!! i have read that it can be hormones and that cancerous breast lumps dont hurt. Is this true? PLEASE HELP! I AM SO FREAKEN SCARED!
Mike - You can have breast cancer since you do have breasts. Men can get it as well.
ReplyDeleteIs there a history of cancer of breast cancer in your family?
If you feel a lump (which you did) go to a doctor! Seriously. Maybe it's a cancer that needs to be removed to save your life. Maybe it's nothing. You don't know so get it checked out. A girl I went to high school with died at 19 or 20 from cancer because it was discovered too late. Early detection is key. Finding out bad news is not scary, it will give you the power because you will be able to fight it. Get it check out, ASAP.
liquidblueflame - You have to go to the doctor to know for sure. The sooner you find out you have it the better because your chances of wellness will be much higher. Breast cancer is a survivable cancer.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand it could just be them growing and that lump might not really be a lump but part of your body, they do get sore when they grow.
Q - Breast lumps are common. Every woman will have some in her life. It takes time and education to be able to detect the difference between a benign lump and a cancerous lump. At 13, you almost certainly (99.99% sure) have a benign lump. But tell your mom--she'll take you to the doc, who will check it and reassure you that it's normal. And then you'll know how to tell the difference and won't have this worry and fear anymore.
ReplyDeletejene007 - Have you ever felt a marble? Does the lump in your breast feel like a marble? If not then it is def not cancer. But cancer lumps can hurt. You are 13 and filled with new hormones and your boobs are growing so they will hurt a lot for a while. I agree with everyone that you should see a doctor. And don't ever be afraid to talk to your mother or to advocate for your own health. Saying nothing only makes you more anxious. Had I done nothing when I found my lump (and mine was a marble) I would be dead now. I am sure you are totally healthy but get it checked to ease your mind. And start a dialogue with your mom about breasts so you can better understand them and take good care of them, and yourself!
ReplyDeletelo_mcg - Don't be scared. If a 13 year old had breast cancer her case would make news all over the world. The risk is statistically zero.
ReplyDeleteBreasts are pretty lumpy, bumpy things; even in women old enough for breast cancer, most breast lumps aren't cancer. At your age, with your breasts still growing and developing, any changes (including lumps and bumps) are almost certainly normal hormonal development.
You are right that pain is very rarely a symptom; most people diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain at all.
Please talk to your mother so that she can reassure you; if you really feel you can't do that, then talk to your school nurse - she will be used to girls having this kind of worry and will take you seriously, and will be able to reassure you that you don't have breast cancer
