I Need Help For My Grandpa's Diet?

396545382 My grandpa has a high cholesterol level. He is a Vegetarian, should he be Vegan? What should he do to lower his cholesterol. He is 73 years old.

  1. the guy your mom warned about - Hello shivam, its nice that you care so much for your grandfather. Avoid fatty foods, food with high calories. I dont know much about this so please consult a doctor about the diet.

  2. eldots53 - Look, you haven't really given us much information on your grandfather's diet. Does he eat a lot of full-fat cheeses, eggs, butter, ice cream, cream, sour cream? If he does, even if he's eating a vegetarian diet, he may still be consuming a lot of cholesterol - in which case he should avoid the eggs and butter and ice cream, and avoid baked goodies that contain eggs and butter, and go for the lower fat and reduced fat cheeses and have them in moderation. Substitute plain Greek style yogurt for sour cream. Use olive oil instead of butter for sauteeing; consume avocado but not to excess. Does he eat things like egg noodles? These are loaded with cholesterol; use the egg-free noodles instead. Eat a serving of old-fashioned oatmeal every day. And - is he getting any exercise? That helps tremendously.

Also, just saying that he has "high cholesterol" really doesn't say bupkis. What really counts is the ratio of HDLs (the "good" cholesterols) to LDLs (the "bad" cholesterol), and you also don't report on that.

Lastly - the guy is 73, for pity's sake. Let him enjoy life. Just keep his rear end moving and not sitting.
