Does This Mean I Have A Heart Condition!?? Should I Go To The Doctor!?

396545385 Logn story short. For the past 4 days I have been feeling an on and off feeling of my chest "fluttering" Or "flip flopping". This used to never happen and this happened kind of out of no where. I have been under a lot of stress lately though and it is finals and I have been fighting with my mom a lot so I am hoping this is ust anxiety related. Anyway should I see a doctor? Am I okay!? By the way I am 23 years old. I have had my heart checked out when I was 20 with full ekgs and everythign was fine then.

  1. MT63 - It sounds like you are having panic attacks. I would go to the doctor just to be sure. Explain what's going on, and explain that you have also been under a lot of stress. It's most likely anxiety related, but it's always better to be safe when it comes to that stuff. And, if you go to the doctor, they can most likely prescribe an anti-anxiety med, if you're interested in that, to help you get through this stressful time.

If, however, this is normal stress for you, then wouldn't hurt to visit your doc. Also, there are other factors that can add to the stress on your heart, like loads of caffine, smoking, dieting ( especially diet pills), so stay away from those if you can.

  3. formerly_bob - It might be worthwhile to wait until finals are over and all the dust settles to see if the symptoms are still present when the stress is reduced. If the symptoms are caused by anxiety, they are likely to disappear as well. In general, most heart irregularities like you are describing are not a threat and they are usually not treated.

One way to determine if the symptoms are caused by anxiety is to do some deep breathing and relaxation when the symptoms occur. Many times anxiety symptoms fade pretty rapidly if you take a 5 minute break, sit or lie down in a quiet area, relax all your muscles, think about something relaxing like sitting on beach, unclench your fists, and then take slow, relaxed deep breaths.

  4. Stanley - if ur 23 and have had normal ecgs in the recent past, you most likely don't have anything wrong with your heart. Anxiety can cause palpitations (the fluttering you're feeling in ur chest) by increasing adrenaline in your blood and increasing heart rate and power of contraction. It's no big deal, but it's good to get on top of your stress if that is the problem.

On the off chance, are you pooing a lot? Are you hungry a lot? Have you lost weight? Are you sweating much? If so, high levels of thyroid hormones can cause these symptoms. That's only on the off chance tho buddy! If you don't have those symptoms, i'd defo say it's just high stress and anxiety, no heart condition.

  5. Megan - Sounds like anxiety attacks. I used to have the same things happen to me. I went and got my heart checked like you did at 20 and dr said everything was fine. Try to remain calm with your mom, and try not to stress so much over school. You could always see a psychiatrist, they may prescribe you something for the anxiety. Or if you don't want pills, seek out a therapist. Trust me, spilling your heart out to a non biased stranger who can't tell anyone else what you said is awesome. You'll feel the stress and worry just fade away.
