Does The Doctor Test Pool Chemical Allergies?

396545383 I don't want to take swimming class because I get severely sick when I swim in public pools, yet I don't know if that's an allergy, and if its not, would they still pass it off as an allergy? I told my doctor that I might be allergic to the chemicals in swimming pools. I gave them general symptoms, such as rashes, sneezing, fevers, and throwing up. Will they test me or just take my word?

  1. Dr. G - They could test you for mold allergy with skin prick tests, as mold may be present in indoor swimming pools. If mold allergy is ruled out, exercise spirometry and other general tests can be performed. There are no good tests to characterize the effects of chlorine, they would take your word if you feel better in nonchlorinated swimming pools.

Aurametrix has a growing knowledge base of chemicals people may be sensitive to - in food, personal care products, built and natural environments. You can use it to figure out what makes you feel better or worse.
