My Friend Is A Mother Of A 4 Yr Old And A 1 Yr Old And Was Just Diagnosed With Stage 4 Lung Cancer?

396545116 She was told that there are 2 types and it takes about 8 days for the results to come back to see which type she has. Also told median life expectancy would be about 8 months, if she's lucky 5 years but only about 10% make to the 5 year mark. What's going to happen to her? I'm so scared for her and her family, this isn't fair. She's so young and such a good person and a good mom...I can't believe this!

  1. Tiny - Lung cancers are classified according to histological type. The vast majority of lung cancers are carcinomas—malignancies that arise from epithelial cells. The two most prevalent histological types of lung carcinoma, categorized by the size and appearance of the malignant cells seen by a histopathologist under a microscope, are non-small-cell and small-cell lung carcinoma. The non-small-cell type is the most prevalent by far.

For non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), prognosis is generally poor. Following complete surgical resection of stage IA disease, five-year survival is 67%. With stage IB disease, five-year survival is 57%. The five-year survival rate of patients with stage IV NSCLC is about 1%.

For small-cell lung carcinoma, prognosis is also generally poor. The overall five-year survival for patients with SCLC is about 5%. Patients with extensive-stage SCLC have an average five-year survival rate of less than 1%. The median survival time for limited-stage disease is 20 months, with a five-year survival rate of 20%.
According to data provided by the National Cancer Institute, the median age at diagnosis of lung cancer in the United States is 70 years.

I hope your friend gets treatment and pulls through--stay positive. Best Wishes

  3. Jennifer - It is true that if your loved one is diagnosed with such rare disease so commonly we do not believe all this but with the passage of time we have to accept, we should pray for her and for her children i hope she will cross the surviving limit and will be with her children.
