John W - An iu ( International Unit ) is a micro-litre, 1/1,000,000 of a litre. As a unit of volume, you would have to know the density of what you are measuring in order to calculate the mass in grams. However the density of water is 1 kg per litre or 1 g per ml therefore it would be 1 mg per iu. Much of what we measure are solutions in water and hence have similar densities as water. Of course, iu's are often used to measure vitamins and vitamins can be an oil, acid, or something else so there's no telling what their densities are without knowing which vitamin you are measuring.
