Why Does Benadryl Make Me Soooo Sleepy?

396545383 I have a cold and I just took a benadryl tablet. I usually take the syrup, but I get really sleepy after taking it. but guess what? I also get really sleepy or drowsy after taking the tablet too. Whats in it that makes me so dead tired and sleeepy?

    CJ - I don't know exactly what it is but that's just a normal side affect. IV benadryl knocks you out in literally seconds.

    angziety - Diphenhydramine. It has sedative properties. It is one of the first meds doctors have patients try when they have trouble sleeping.

    Laura - Benadryl typically makes people sleepy. Read the box before you take any medication, it's very clearly labelled. Also, Benadryl will not work to help any cold symptoms, unless you're also suffering from allergies. Again, read the box.

    But to answer your question, most antihistamines both treat allergies and act as sedatives. Benadryl is one of those.

    Doc Pool - benadryl works by acting on receptors that control allergy. At the same time it also affects the receptors in your body that are responsible for keeping you awake. Drowsiness is a known side effect of most anti allergics / anti histamines / anti cough meds.
