Unquenchable Thirst? Diabetes?

396545384 So the last couple of days I've had unquenchable thirst, I drink a ton of water a day, and usually right after I drink some I have to pee right away. Everything I read so far has pointed towards diabetes. Just so you know I'm an 18 year old female who's around 120 lbs. I haven't had any major weight loss, is it possible for this to be a symptom of something other than diabetes? Do I need to go to the doctor right away? It's very hard for me to go since I'm in college right now. I do get these sometimes, but it usually goes away the next day, its never lasted this long before. Also a while ago I was having numbness in my big toe, but that went away too. I just really don't want to have diabetes...

  1. Jupiter - When you're well hydrated, it's normal to have to pee 10-30 minutes after drinking water. If you're that worried, see a doctor. It's probably environmental factors or a change in your routine that's causing it.

  2. Felex Fff - There are 2 ways to find out without seeing your Dr. Go to a pharmacy and buy Diastix or Keto-Diastix and pee on one, if the green pad turns color (brown) go directly to the hospital, the other way is to buy a glucometer, You should be able to get a store brand for less than $20 with the strips costing $20 for #50, Some machines come with 10 strips. If you test above 150 mg/dl (8.25 mmol/l) you are borderline and should make an appt, anything above 200mg/dl (11mmol/l) you should go to the er. Most come with the lancets and lancing device, make sure you have all of these as the diastix are hard to find. If diabetes is not in your family the chances are on your side. If you are diabetic it's type 1 and only 9 % of all diabetics are type 1 which is only about 0.6% of the US or something. Lucky me.

  4. John W - I usually tell people that think they have diabetes because of urination to taste their urine to see if it's sweet as that was how diabetes was diagnosed in the middle ages.

Really, you could just ask your Doctor.

If you must test yourself, you can do the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test as described on Wikipedia. Just get yourself a glucose meter, you can usually get one for free from a pharmacy or from the manufacturer's website ( accu-check.ca is giving away a Nano meter with 150 test strips for free right now, don't know if the US site is doing the same ). The test itself is simple, after fasting, take a reading then take 75 grams of glucose, 2 sodas or a bunch of hard candy will do the trick and wait two hours to take another reading, then look up the results on the chart on the Wikipedia website.
