ChemoAngel - Yes. You should. Metformin Side Effect are Horrible, and should not be put up with for 6 weeks! I feel for you! I have only been on it a week, and I feel downright miserable!
Nana Lamb - That depends on the side effects!! I have diarrhea and gas on a permanent basis and have for more than 15 years. It is better when I take the extended release formula rather than the regular formula.
I use either Beano or Gas-X and Pepto when I need to leave the house.
My new doctor didn't believe me that the regular formula has no effect on my fasting glucose numbers so trying to save me some money, he Rx'd the regular the last time I was in there to get renewals. I am out of control once again!
No choice but to change doctors once again and try to find one that actually listens, my last one retired and left the state!!
TheOrange Evil - Yes, you should talk to your doctor. Metformin GI side effects don't typically last as long as 6 weeks. Your doctor may reduce your dosage temporarily and work you into the higher dose slowly over time, prescribe the extended release version or just pull you off the medication entirely.
OTC stomach medications can help. Just make sure to talk to a pharmacist first.
Kai - Yea, tell your doctor everything. It won't mean he'll take you off the meds but at least he's been kept apprised of your condition. I've been on Met for 10 weeks and still have gas and some other digestive problems, some days are worse then other, plus I wake up feeling so dead tired which never happened before Met (yes, I'm telling my doctor when I see her in December). You may want to ask your doctor whether using an extended-release Met may work better for you so you get small amount over the whole day instead of an big load suddenly.
