well wisher - They will develop symptoms of hypothyroidism and live miserable life.Death may not be early but it is must to take external thyroxine supplementation.
Death is never predictable even when a patient is hooked up to a cardiac monitor, breathing machine etc.
There are many organs and processes which are not clearly understood. The thyroid does control the metabolic rate but it does not mean that when there is NO thyroid then there is NO metabolism. The patient begins to function at a lower level but does NOT stop metabolism/breathing etc.
It is possible that the patient may not die from hypothyroidism but may die from the complications of hypothyroidism eg constipation.
jackie m - You would have various medical problems because you need the thyroid to help with your metabolic system and your internal organs but it would take several years of suffering. As I do take the thyroxine every day.
Gilda - I've not had my thyroid removed but I'm supposed to take supplements yet I don't care if I do or not. My docs always freak about this, but I swear, I don't feel any differently if I take it or not. A lot of people say they do, though.
JBryan314 - Um... How about they just keep taking it? Let's do that instead.
