Does Waxed Dental Floss Clean As Well As Unwaxed?

396545381 It's hard to get used to not feeling the scraping, and squeaky-clean sounds that I get from unwaxed, not to mention the additional surface area from the spreading fibers.
@Sandy - where do they mention the clinical studies?

  1. Sandy - Yes, it does. However, if you like the way the increased surface area is flossed, you can try a ribbon-type floss like DentoTape. It spreads out nicely and covers a lot of tooth surface.

BTW - below is a link from Oral-B, a company that makes both waxed and unwaxed floss. Their clinical studies have proven that waxed floss removes plaque just as well as unwaxed. The main advantage to waxed is that it slips through contacts easier, very useful for someone who has a lot of crowding in their mouth.

Remember that plaque is a soft substance that is easily removed by home care such as brushing and flossing. It's not like tartar (calculus) that must be scraped off with a curette.

***Keep flossing! You're doing a good thing!

  2. tooth975 - NO. The wax coating does not remove plaque as effectively as unwaxed floss.
