Worried About Getting Braces?

396545381 I'm 13 and I'm getting braces sometime this month. I'm really scared. When I went to get my teeth checked out by the orthodontist, he said that I'm for sure gonna have to pull all 4 of my fangs out! How much does pulling teeth out hurt? Please tell me everything that happens when getting braces. I'm really worried and scared. HELP!

  3. Glenda Greasy Spunk - I had that done to me and you just have to think about how good it will look at the end.
It's like a small time amount of pain compared to a life time of beautiful teeth!
It does'nt even hurt that much anyway trust me :)

  5. Ailish - I haven't had braces yet myself, but some of my closest friends have. This is basically what happens:
They numb you, and pull out your teeth. It shouldn't hurt, and if it does, not very much and not for more than a second.
Then, when you are ready to get the braces, they use special glue to glue little silver squares onto each of your your teeth, then put a wire through those. That wire can be tightened and loosened when the orthodontists think is appropriate, so it pulls your teeth into position. None of this is hurting at this point. It does take awhile though.
They will give you a funny looking brush to clean your teeth, maybe some further instructions or other bits and pieces, nothing much else.
The real problem is after you've had them on for awhile. Once they start to pull your teeth, they will start to ache. This aching is a real problem for about 2 days, until your teeth get used to the braces. Just take some painkillers until the aching wears off, and then it will be fine.
Then, each time the wire is tightened, you will go through the same thing.
It's really a quite easy process. You just need to have a good stock of painkillers for every time the wire gets tightened, and some soft foods for when it's aching and you feel like you can't chew.

Good luck. It's not too bad. You don't need to panic.

  6. tooth975 - The teeth orthodontists pull are the premolars and it would be in your best interest not to allow that to happen because it will have the following undesirable effects: it will make your mouth smaller than normal, it will make your nose and chin more prominent, it will cause the area around the mouth to be sunken in (aka dished-in profile), it will make you look older than you are, it will cause deep creases around the mouth, it will make the upper and lower back teeth not come together properly, it will make the lower jaw bite too far back, and this type of treatment has been shown to cause TMJ problems, especially in females. To avoid all these problems you should insist on non extraction treatment and/or expansion of the jaws to make the needed room to straighten teeth. Many traditional orthodontists now do expansion instead of pulling perfectly good teeth and these are the ones you need to do your braces. Google "TMJ Disorders" to see what you may have to go through if you develop TMJ. Check this website out to find someone who can do more modern and up to date orthodontics - www.iaortho.org. By not having teeth pulled you won't have to be all stressed out or scared.
