Am I Pre Diabetic Or Am I Normal?

396545384 I am 14 years old I do excersise every day and I drink a lot of water. Today I did glucose test ( I did not eat for 11 hours) and I got 101. Is it okay? I saw on the internet that above 100 is pre diabetic, so is it true or am I okay?

  1. maria - If your blood glucose measures 100 mg/dL to 125 mg/dL which is higher than normal level but it is not high enough to be regarded as Diabetes, your doctor will still tell you to do another blood test. Ruling out other abnormal condition, if the second test is almost the same with latter one, you are classified as having impaired fasting glucose which means your metabolism of glucose is abnormal. You have to pay more attention to control the blood glucose level because you have an increased risk of getting pre-diabetes.

  2. Noccie - That's fine. The difference between 100 and 101 is insignificant. Did a doctor do the test, or did you do it yourself without medical guidance?

  3. TheOrange Evil - In a doctor's office, that's in pre-diabetic range, defined as 100-125 mg/dL. Most people without diabetes fast in the low 80s and fasting regularly in the 90s or above can be an indication a person is at risk of developing diabetes. We have to separate out diagnostic criteria and what's truly normal. Anything 99 mg/dL and below is considered "not diabetic," but if you are fasting in the upper end of that range, that's not normal. If you're fasting slightly above that range, that's not normal either.

If you used a home glucose meter, your actual blood sugar result could've been higher or lower, so it's impossible to say what's happening.

Whichever method you used to test your blood sugar, one isolated reading doesn't necessarily mean anything. Diagnosing diabetes is about establishing a pattern of elevated blood sugar. So, while this should prompt you to get more testing because it's an abnormal result. there's no reason to panic quite yet.
