My dog has been diagnosed with late stage renal failure. We will be giving sub-q fluids at home which should help but she HATES the veterinary prescription diet foods. What can we do? I'm willing to cook for her (retired and have plenty of time) but am having difficulty finding an appropriate recipe - I can't find a veterinary nutritionist in our area - our vet will refer us to one but there will be a large fee...we've spent so much money this year on our pets our funds are running low...help!Saturday, November 12, 2011
Late Stage Canine Renal Failure?
My dog has been diagnosed with late stage renal failure. We will be giving sub-q fluids at home which should help but she HATES the veterinary prescription diet foods. What can we do? I'm willing to cook for her (retired and have plenty of time) but am having difficulty finding an appropriate recipe - I can't find a veterinary nutritionist in our area - our vet will refer us to one but there will be a large fee...we've spent so much money this year on our pets our funds are running low...help!

ReplyDeletekornerzooz - Find out the closest veterinary college near you. The local library can help if they will. They usually have a vet dietitian. Call them and ask. If they do not ask for suggestions.
ReplyDeleteklue 2 - I would ask my vet which foods are compatible with the condition, and which foods to avoid.
ReplyDeleteThen try different combinations of them until your pet lets you know that this is what it likes.
My dog is 11 1/2 years old and is Diabetic. I supplement his dry dog food ( Purina 1 Senior ) with Chicken and Brown Rice.
I use a pressure cooker to cook a whole chicken until well done. About 25 -30 min. under pressure.
When cooled I bone the cooked chicken, then skim off the fat from the broth.
Puree the chicken in a food processor using broth to moisten as needed. Return the pureed chicken
to the kettle, add 1 Lb Brown rice, mix thoroughly and return to pressure (or cook in kettle ) about 15
min to get the rice about 1/2 + cooked. Mix the half cooked rice and pureed chicken then portion
it. ( I use a 2 oz ice cream scoop ) then freeze them in a cookie sheet.
Put in ziplock or similar freezer bag
They will keep until you use them up
One per meal (thawed and warmed with enough water to moisten the dry food a bit.
Works for us, Bear and I.
Change the ingredients as necessary to comply with you dog's needs.
Moderate Somber - You give her what she likes, this is a time for palliative care. Boiled chicken (make it soft) just the meat, mix it with a bit of regular dog food and warm water. As long as she is eating and can go to bathroom, she is alright.
ReplyDeleteA part of loving and caring for a dog means to let them go too, when it is their time. Have always loved dogs and they lived to be 15-16, most died of cancer.
