Wisdom Teeth Extraction Experiences?

396545381 I'm getting all four of them extracted tomorrow, and I'm pretty nervous..I don't really know what to expect or do before or after. Am I allowed to have liquids or some form of nourishment after the extraction, or just wait the next day? My dentist didn't give me any preparation details or advice when we scheduled the appointment..

  1. Ed - i had all of mine taken out a year ago it was not that bad just remember to take something for pain if you don't or forget you will regret it.

  2. Daddiesgirl - My friend just had hers done and the most important thing to remember: DO NO AND I REPEAT DO NOT DRINK FROM A STRAW!! If you drink from a straw, then you could get a dry socket, which hurts more than the actual procedure! But there is nothing to worry about. They give you some pretty good meds ;) Good Luck!

Its a very normal thing that almost everyone goes through at some point. After your extractions its best to eat soft foods that will not get caught in your extraction site. Although soup is a good idea stay away from soups that have small noodles or rice.
Do not spit or suck from a straw!! The most painful thing about an extraction can be Dry Socket. Basically you want a clot to form where you tooth was, and if you spit or drink from a straw you can create a suction and that clot can get dislodged which can cause extreme pain. If that happens RELAX, its not the end of the world! Just call your dentist and they will bring you back immediately and squeeze you between patients if they need to. They will put a bit of cream in your extraction site and make it feel better almost instantly.

Relax, put your feet up and grab some ice cream! Wisdom teeth extraction is a lot better than most people think :)

  4. Pika Chu - I got mine out in 2008, and from what I've heard from family recently getting theirs out, they've gotten better with the procedure. From when I had it done, they put you to sleep then work. If somehow you're still conscious, don't worry-- they freeze your jaws so you shouldn't feel a thing.

My dentist told me that it will take about 2 weeks to heal, though if you're lucky (as I was), it'll be one week.

You may need medication if you're sensitive to pain. I don't think it will matter which one to use, but if you have preferences, I remember my family doctor telling me that Advil is less acidic than Tylenol.

You can drink liquids maybe after an hour or two, I'm sure (and if not, then I did it anyway). For food, you can drink meal replacement shakes, such as Slim Fast, but you may get sick of it after a while. After a few days, you can try eating soft stuff (congee from Chinese restaurants, Wonder bread, etc), but be careful it doesn't get stuck in those area.

When you brush your teeth, remember to avoid that area for a bit. Don't stick your tongue in that area too often and let it heal on its own.

I hope some of this helps.

  5. arnie g - Just a heads up,you may not want them to give you a drug called Versed

In fact, many people who use Versed for "conscious sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time.

Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is commonly administered in combination with anesthesia before and during surgery. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscience sedation so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort. However, that does not mean that those sensations will not be experienced.

. There is a blog that has some more info that would be interesting
