Matt - Really it was the countless cancer patients, researchers and doctors that have been struggling against cancer for ages. Our ability to detect and treat cancers is due to trial and error approaches to medicine that started out with operations that today would be over the top even for the most horrific horror film out there.
Tiny - You can't look at it that way. To use your line of reasoning is not appropriate in this instance. I could also argue that the janitors that cleaned the operating room so that surgery was even possible were the real heros. In medicine it is a collaborative team effort.
Laurie - The surgeon cannot cut it out unless it is found,So the Dr. who found it I guess.
