My boyfriend is allergic to ALL types of fruits and nuts, except for peanuts. What kind of medicines can he try, besides Benedryl, or anything that would cause drowsiness. Anything that would help, please. Thank you!
tn_blu1 - Benadryl is an antihistamine, and there are other antihistamines available without a prescription that usually do not cause drowsiness. One of the best (and the one I use) is Claritin. You can buy the generic version (loratidine) much cheaper than Claritin. I buy mine at Sam's Club for about 4 or 5 cents per pill. Although the directions say to take one pill a day, my allergist told me to take 2 pills per day whenever I have a lot of allergy problems. Allegra is another similar drug.
Chocofroggu - I know reactin works well for my sister who's got a ton of allergies. Um, benedryl was the other thing that came to mind. But I usually have to duke it out when my allergies are going crazy cause I'm allergic to glycerin (a chemical in some things like soap, lotions etc.). How allergic is he? If it's really bad then I would just try to stay far away from those things (asking to get his work to be a nut free office, having no nut or fruits in your home, etc.) Hope he gets better! God bless!
JUST ME - Benadryl is the only OTC med that has antihistamine all the others don't...they use a different chemical, they can be ok for very slight reacts..but won't stop the histamines that are released when an ieG enters or comes in contact with your body It can take up to 5 - 7 days for the IeG protein to leave your body.It depends on how much & how allergic you are. a simple blood test can help you figure out what & how much you can react to things. my son & I have dealt with severe allergies since we were infants.(I'm 51,he's 15)Our Pulmonary/Allergists only recommend benadryl over the others...we have tried them all...none work for very long. so it's safer to deal with the drowsiness. you need an antihistamine to block the react from the IeG proteins, which your body releases histamine to try to get rid of the IeGs
Seth - Claratin and Claratin-D are specifically formulated to cause less drowsiness than first-line antihistamines like benedryl. The allergy-fighting ability is slightly less as well, but overall it's a better choice for daily allergies. For more severe allergies it's good to keep some benedryl on hand.
