Ok-carb Experts....help?

396545384 ok-I get total carbs and you subtract the fiber to find out the glycemic index (lows are good-for slow digesting -non-sugar spiking foods)

But now I'm looking at these atkins bars and they say "net carbs"--it looks like they subtracted sugar alcohols out, along with the fiber? why? can they really do that? lol.....what's it mean?

thanks for any info!

  1. Nana Lamb - I count and inject for TOTAL CARBS only! I do not subtract for the fiber carbs as they too can cause high glucose levels.

I never eat or drink anything with sugar alcohols in it as that is laxative and so is Metformin and I just don't need any more laxative action going on.

Look at the ingredients in any of those supplement bars!! You would be much better off eating a regular candy bar and enjoying it instead of those rock hard indigestible chemical bars.

  3. formerly_bob - The concept of the Atkins bar is to provide high protein. Their marketing shtick manipulates the package information to make it look like there are fewer carbohydrates. Look at the nutrition label - it has to conform with FDA standards.

  4. Cindy in Texas - I can NOT recommend the Atkins bars or shakes for weight loss. They claim "sugar alcohols don't count" but I have heard from hundreds of people that can't lose with them included in their plan.

They are fine for maintenance, but not weight loss.
