How To Make My Home Livable For Someone Visiting W/allergies?

396545383 My mother-in-law is coming to visit her 6 month old grandson (and the rest of us) for the weekend. She has very bad allergies, which include cats. We have two cats here so what steps can I take to make my home livable for the short time she'll be here?

  1. tabbie - I get allergy shots once a week I too can't be around cats, dogs, dust mites..... I had to give my cats away because I was getting so sick, the doctor said it would take 8 months to get the dander out of my home but they did give me a booklet to help clean my home,so here's what it says...encase pillows with non allergic covers (about 7 dollars each at Walmart they do help)! Wash all blankets, rugs, curtains, blinds, shampoo carpet if you have it hardwood floors are better,if you have a heat pump they have special filters for allergies (about 16 dollars for a really good one at Walmart) make the room as plain as possible like only a bed nightstand dresser no nic knacks for dander to lay on,also a air cleaner would help, vacuum your home do not sweep it only stirs it up in the air, dust everything in your home about a week before she arrives,I would clean the couch to because she will have to be out of the room she's in,and maybe keep the cats outside or maybe at a friends house,if that's not possible I would keep them in one room but never allow them to go in hers.I know it's alot but just do what you can,if I'm around a cat within a day I will be getting sick,if one touches me I will break out in big red itchy welts my eyes start itching, some people are worse than others but just washing everything with soap and water will help alot. Congrats on the new baby!!!! It's really sweet that you think of your mother in law,you don't hear to much of that lol

You have cats and she is allergic. Thus, you need to tell your MIL to get a hotel room. Otherwise, she is disrupting your lifestyle and imposing.

  3. pennypincher - It depends upon how severe her cat allergies are. Her bedroom will need to be cat-free. You will need to vacuum everything, including the furniture.
Personally, I would not be able to tolerate it anyway. If I even sit next to someone who was holding a cat earlier in the day, I have an allergic reaction. I don't have to see the cat to react to it. I also have an occasional problem with library books. If the previous person read the book and petted a cat and handled the book without washing their hands I have a reaction when I later read the book.
