N - If you are thin then a normal sized abdominal aorta can be palpated through the abdomen. If you are older than 50 or have a family history you should have an ultrasound to measure your abdominal aorta.
John W - He's not feeling it through your stomach. He's looking at the pumonary veins in your neck and observing what happens to the pulse in them when he applies pressure to your stomach. He's probably adjusted the seat back that you're sitting on to the 45 degree mark to do so. It takes practice to do the JVP but it's useful to Cardiologist. I wouldn't expect every Doctor to know how to do it and certainly few American Doctors.
