Is Chapped Lips An Everyday Occurrence While Taking Claravis (a.k.a. Accutane)?

396545389 Hello. I just started taking Claravis (better known as the generic brand of Accutane) 8 days ago and around last Friday I noticed that my lips started to get dry and eventually chapped. I've been putting medicated chap-stick on 4x a day to help relieve them but for the past couple of days I've had chapped lips and it's starting to irritate me. Is this going to be the case the entire time I'm on Claravis or will it eventually go away with some chap-stick? If not, what can I do to help my chapped lips? Thanks so much.

  1. H - Chapped lips happen to everyone at any time.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. We are not medically trained and neither is the internet.

  2. Deanna - Isotretinoin products dehydrate your body from within, so Chapstick just won't cut it. You need some of the heavy hitters. Try applying Aquaphor to your lips as needed. I have heard good things about Blistex Silk & Shine, too. While Silk & Shine is not necessarily a "heavy hitter," it is not medicated, which can irritate your lips even more. If chapped lips are your biggest concern while taking Claravis, you're actually doing pretty good. Good luck!

  3. americanidiot0414 - It is a very common side effect. The only way to help it is try different brands of lip salve/chapstick to see which helps you the most. It will probably be there the whole time you are ongoing treatment because of the way the drug works it reduces the amount of oils in your skin, the acne goes but everything else dries up.
I had a similar problem, but I also had really dry skin in awkward places and dry scalp like horrible dandruff. If you mention it to your dermatologist they may be able to recommend something that is more effective for people taking Accutane who have dry lips.
Basically, you will have to deal with it.
