Can Diabetics Eat Fruit Or Are They Only Supposed To Eat Vegetables?

  1. followpol - Diabetics can eat fruit. The only thing to be careful about is if the fruit has been sweetened. Then they need to watch their sugar intake or use an artificial sweetener.

  2. Tabea - Diabetics can eat whatever they like, so long as their blood sugar remains within target, 2 hours after eating.

Only way to find out is to eat, then test.

The same food can affect different people differently.

Some fruit are lower in carbs and will not have that big an impact on blood sugar.

Some vegetables are high in carbs and WILL raise blood sugar.

  3. Mr. Smartypants - Fruit tends to be full of sugar, so we have to be careful with it.

The thing about diabetes is that there's nothing you can't eat, you just have to treat some things with respect, be careful how you eat them, not just eat all you want. For instance, I can have half an apple or pear after dinner and it won't raise my blood sugar. Or I can have a whole apple before i got out for my exercise (walking or riding my bicycle for an hour).

Strawberries, raspberries, any kind of berries, have less carbs so I can munch on them a little more freely, but still not all I want.

Every diabetic is different, so you have to experiment with your glucometer to see what you can handle and what not. For instance, i found I can eat about half a potato with no trouble, or a small french fries. But the same amount of rice will send my blood sugar off the charts. But we're all different, some can eat rice but not potato. I can have an apple or a pear before my exercise, but a banana will still raise my blood sugar over 200. Once you're diagnosed with diabetes, your whole life becomes one big science experiment. 8^)
