Are Diabetics Smarter Than Other People?

396545384 I read that glucose is the thing that feeds the brain and that people with higher than normal levels of glucose are better motivated, have better memories, concentrate better and learn faster.

So doesn't it stand to reason that diabetics are smarter than most other people?

  1. Neil - Well, the problem is that diabetics don't metabolize glucose properly, so they have too much in their blood, but not a lot in their brain.

So they have a harder time functioning properly.

  2. Elena - No, that's utter rubbish. Intelligence is dependent on genetics, social environment and willing-ness to learn. Different medical conditions may affect this but ultimately intelligence is choice and not fluke or luck.

  3. Will - lol i wish that were true. thats like saying 'if you give a car more petrol it will go faster.' i'm afriad theres no link whatsoever. yes the brain primerily respires glucose but it has an optimum rate. intelligence is part of your nature, and u can enhance it through study (nurture) etc, having sugar or caffeine for that matter may make you think faster in the short term but it doesn't increase your intelligence. your motivation and attitude are far more important. now combine copious levels of caffeine with a long morning revising and then you might be on to something.

  4. yr_nxt_bf - I am a parallel systems engineer and work in the supercomputer department at Sandia National Labs. My job has me working closely with some of the smartest people in the world.

From my experience, diabetes does seem to be the common thing here... almost every one of our leads have type II diabetes. So this does seem to make sense.

I myself have type II diabetes, am a grand master chess champion, and even though the norm for my profession requires at least six years of schooling, I did not spend one minute in school. Everything I know I learned on my own, and I achieved my success through ability only.

  5. micksmixxx - What you've heard is 100% wrong, my friend. Although glucose is the primary source of 'food' for the brain, too high a glucose level is very damaging to your body's organs, blood vessels, and nerves. Therefore, it doesn't stand to reason.

    Edit:

I suggest you check it out with someone that knows what they're talking about, you clown. You'll find out then, that I am correct.

    Edit 2:

I notice there are idiots about too. Does it ring any bells?

  7. ? - Seems interesting enough. My brother and I both have T1 and we were the intellectual "smarter" ones compared to our younger siblings. However, I don't think there's a link between intelligence and diabetes. There's a lot more links to diabetics and depression, though.
