John W - Maltose is two glucose molecules stuck together and will be broken down into glucose. What the glucose is supposed to do is bring energy to the cells however it takes insulin for the glucose molecules to enter the cells to be used. What you don't need as energy is converted to glycerides and fats by your liver, again this takes insulin for it to enter the liver. If you don't have the insulin or the insulin that you do have don't work well, the glucose will build up to levels where the kidney must remove them hence the term diabetes mellitus which means sweet urine. Yes, they used to taste the urine to diagnose diabetes, Doctors are really glad about blood tests.
