My father in-law is 56yrs old. He was a construction worker full time and a fire fighter part time. A few months back it started with shortness of breath and tightness/ heaviness in his chest. He went to the dr. they gave him an inhaler and sent him on his way. A few days later he fainted from lack of oxygen. Then hospitalized. They found a mass in each of his lungs. They appear to be pressing upon his lymph nodes which appear to be inflamed as well. They sent him home with prednisone and yet another inhaler. They wanted him to see a specialist and have another test done when his "flare up" was gone. Well he hasn't gotten better only worse! He was in the hospital for the 5th time in 2 months yesterday. When he arrived his oxygen was at 60% the breathing treatment brought him to 72%. He is now coughing up small amounts of blood. The tech that was capturing his images asked many questions about him working with asbestos (which he has). So now naturally we are all concerned that he may have pleural mesothelioma. He does see the specialist on Tuesday. The thing that has me stumped is that his blood count was normal. Arent the white cells supposed to be elevated?Friday, January 13, 2012

Moderate Somber - Not all coughing of blood is a result of some deadly disease, though it must certainly be investigated. Evidently cancer is not being suspected at this time, otherwise imaging such as CT scan and PET scan would have already been ordered. He could have an infections bronchitis, it can cause blood to be coughed up. He could also have walking pneumonia or developed asthma. He must be monitored and rested. Your point about the blood count is valid. Though cancer is not detected by blood tests, it can indicate various disease. Also, it does not appear he has enlarged lymph nodes. Specialist will be able to identify and get him further testing. Hopefully, he is going to a pulmonologist.
