I don't have diabetes but my mom has type I diabetes and so does my mom's sister. I drink orange juice everyday for breakfast. Is it safe to do this? Because I've heard orange juice is bad for diabetes patients.
TheOrange Evil - Orange juice contains a lot of sugar. A person with diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2, can drink orange juice, depending on how much their blood sugar will spike and whether they can bring their blood sugar back to normal relatively quickly.
Your mother and your aunt are on insulin and they can calculate how much insulin they need to prevent blood sugar from going too high. I am a Type 2 who's not on insulin, so I would not drink orange juice simply because I don't have any method, other than time and exercise, to get my blood sugar to return to normal.
If you don't have diabetes, then drinking a glass of orange juice every day won't raise your blood sugar to diabetic levels. You would only need to limit your intake of sugar for diet or other health reasons, whatever those may be. The non-diabetic pancreas has an almost unlimited capacity to handle sugar and so you're in no danger as long as you don't have diabetes.
Ben Trolled - Orange juice is good for you, not good for a diabetic. Yes, a type 1 can adjust with insulin, but why use more insulin than you would if you ate and drank low carb..
John W - A diabetic would normally avoid orange juice because it has a lot of sugars but if the diabetic is taking bolus shots, he simply has to account for the orange juice in the shot. Orange juice will often be used by a diabetic during hypoglycemia when they've taken too much medicine or insulin and need some sugars quickly.
In the hospital, they served me orange juice on the diabetic menu.
Matt - no me and my dad are diabetic and its actually helps stimulate ur body.
ReplyDeleteYour Fat Mama - Fruit juice in general tends to have a lot of sugar, so it can be bad for some diabetics. It depends on their specific cases.

Bethany J - Type 1 diabetics can NOT have juice of any kind unless they are experiencing a low blood sugar, and then only a small amount.

Josh - It is horrible. Essentially you are drinking a sugar drink with vitamins.
