My mum's 50 and has never smoked but she's had this cough for around a month now and it seems to disappear for a day or two but then comes back again. I'm scared it could be lung cancer. I really don't know what to do! I lost my dad to a heart attack a few years ago and my granddad to myeloma (bone marrow cancer?) two years later and I'm scared I'm going to lose my mum too! Please
help me I'm only 14!
geezabeeza - Talk to her, tell her to go and see a Doctor immediately.
ReplyDeleteAllyson - I'm very sorry about your many losses. I don't think she has cancer, because it's the flu season, and everyone's coughing. I can't tell you I'm right though... Talk to your mom and tell her that you've been noticing her coughing, and you want her to stay safe.Tell her you want her to visit the doctor. If she disagrees, tell her it's for the best for you because you always want your family members to stay in healthy conditions. Stay positive about it :) Good Luck.
ReplyDeletePenelope Poopland - If it's just a cough, it could be a number of things. It could be untreated bronchitis, or a number of other sicknesses because a cough is relatively common. Unless she's coughing up blood and is incredibly weak after she's done having a coughing fit, do you need to worry. But I understand the worry, I lost my dad to cancer, and now anytime me or my loved ones have symptoms, I get incredibly worried because that buffer of "no one in my family is going to die soon" is gone. Sending good vibes your way!
ReplyDeleteformerly_bob - A persistent cough is usually either a lingering effect of the flu or bronchitis that can sometimes last for months; a symptom of pneumonia; or irritation caused by allergies and dry indoor air during winter. One type of pneumonia can cause almost no symptoms other than a persistent cough. Lung cancer is virtually non-existent in people that don't smoke or don't live in a house with other smokers. A rule of thumb for a persistent cough is to see a doc when a cough lasts 6 weeks or when a cough lasts more than 2 weeks and is accompanied by a fever. Still, it might be worthwhile trying to convince her to see a doc to diagnose her cough.
ReplyDeleteConfuzzled - Tell your mum about your fears. Ask he rto go to the doctors, for you if she won't go for herself. She probably just has a nasty chest infection that can easily be cleared up by antibiotics (there's a lot of it about). Don't worry about the unknown. Just nag your mum to go to the doctor to get her cough checked out.
ReplyDeleteDr. Vanderburg - Don't worry... please. If she has never smoked, it is HIGHLY unlikely to be lung cancer. Plus it's Winter. I keep having bad colds. If it continues, see a doctor, maybe bronchitis or something similar. But don't take my word for it.
ReplyDeleteBon Bon - No, she could have allergies, I used to cough months at a time.
ReplyDeletealso , if she takes medication like for high blood pressure, that could cause coughing.
Lung cancer symptom is like hard to breath shortness of breath, don't worry.
