Am I Diabetic? Age 24 And Otherwise Healthy.?

396545384 I just turned 24. My BMI is 18.5 with no recent weight gain or loss. I go to the gym a few times a week and I can lift twice my body weight. I eat a fairly healthy diet. My blood pressure is normally around 100/60, with resting heart rate of 56. I have no medical problems, and no first-degree relatives with diabetes.

Yet, my blood sugar seems to be out of whack. (I've been monitoring it for a while now due to hypoglycemia symptoms.) After a meal my blood sugar goes up to around 200 at the 1hour mark (asymptomatic: no polydipsia/polyuria/etc), but then it rapidly falls. If I don't eat for about 3 hours, I find myself sweating and shaking with sugar levels in the 50s. My fasting glucose levels are normal (75-80).

I went to the doctor, she checked my fasting glucose and then told me i'm a hypochondriac. So what's going on?

  1. lolabear - continue to monitor your sugar level with your diet -avoid processed foods & increase your protein intake. drink lotsa water, keep a food/sugar diary, & see your doctor.

  2. Diane A - You are not diabetic; but you probably need a 5 hour glucose tolerance test. You are micromanaging your glucose levels however. (It is normal for glucose to rise after a meal)

  3. Noccie - You are not diabetic. If your blood sugar really falls to the 50's after a three hour fast then you need to change your diet. Look up the glycemic index and eat less foods with a high GI number and more foods with a low GI number. Low GI foods keep your blood sugar stable.

  4. John W - Seems like you have reactive hypoglycemia where your pancreas kicks in late and overkills on the insulin. That's not diabetes but it is a regulatory problem. Try eating smaller, more frequent meals and lower glycemic index foods.

    You need to point out that you're hypoglycemic after a meal and get your Doctor to do the oral glucose tolerance test but with glucose readings every 15 minutes during the three hours instead of the usual two after the glucose. If you go in saying you think you're diabetic then of course the Doctor is going to look at your H1A1C and your fasting test and say you're a hypochondriac. You go in saying you're sweating and shaking three hours after eating, don't try to stuff a diagnosis down a Doctor's throat.

  5. Wayne - You are not diabetic. You are hypoglycemic and your dr can treat you for that. Do not try to self medicate

    check fasting blood sugar also blodd sugar of 200 following food do suggest diabeties consult your dictor continue exercise and also start dieting stops sweets eat lot of vegetable your BMI is ok there is no need for reducing weight.
    consult doctor as there is possibilty of type 1 DM in your age group but dont worry. all things have treatement

  7. micksmixxx - I'm with John W on this one, my friend. It does seem that you're suffering with Reactive Hypoglycemia.

    Ask your doctor for an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). You will be required to fast overnight for this test. A blood sample will be taken before you're requested to drink a sickly sweet drink called glucola. Thereafter you'll be tested at hourly intervals. A comparison of the blood sugar (glucose) readings will determine whether there is a 'problem' or not.

    By the way, your testing after 1 hour is a waste of test strips. The only persons requested to test after one hour of eating are pregnant women, who MAY be suffering with gestational diabetes, and newly diagnosed diabetics who can see how much different foodstuffs raise their blood sugar (glucose) levels.

  8. TheOrange Evil - Spiking up to 200 mg/dL at any point after eating is abnormal. There's a reason that a "random" glucose test of 200 mg/dL and over is considered in diabetic range at a doctor's office. That reason is that it's never considered non-diabetic to be that high, regardless of when and what food was consumed. I wouldn't expect you to be symptomatic when you're that high simply because your blood sugar is dropping too fast.

    Yes, you are experiencing reactive hypoglycemia, but I disagree everyone here who's dismissing what you're going through as only that, as though people with hypoglycemia spike into diabetic range usually. (They do not.) The 1-hour reading is significant in your case. Without testing it, we wouldn't know about the high spikes and we would have a more incomplete picture of the hypoglycemia.

    For whatever reason, your pancreas' first-phase insulin response--the one that responds to rising glucose after meals--is impaired. Normally, in a person without diabetes or any pancreatic issues, blood sugar will rise slowly and steadily, peaking at around 30 minutes to an hour depending on what was consumed, and then return to normal around 2 hours. The peak is usually no higher than the 120s mg/dL, often below 100 mg/dL, and never higher than 140 mg/dL. (Or, at least, it shouldn't be.) Obviously, that's not what you're seeing. Instead of a gradual arch, you're seeing a dramatic spike, and then a horrible dramatic drop within 3 hours.

    The high spikes may actually be causing the reactive hypoglycemia, not the other way around. Your pancreas' signaling is delayed, but when it does catch up, it overcompensates and plummets your blood sugar into a very uncomfortable range.

    You have to understand that many doctors only rely on the fasting glucose test to diagnose diabetes. Fasting blood sugar only provides one snapshot in time of what blood sugar is doing. Your fasting levels are normal and that's not surprising - after all, your pancreas works well enough to bring you down to the 50s after being up around 200 just a few hours beforehand. If your pancreas can do the job in 3 hours, then 8 hours is plenty of time. I've read a diabetic study that showed that postprandial (after-meal) blood sugar often spikes in people in the early stages of diabetes when fasting levels are still normal. As a result, the FBG doesn't detect these people. Another problem is that the A1c, which is a 90-day average of blood sugar levels, may not always be high because the spikes aren't lasting long enough.

    The only way your doctor is going to take this seriously, I'm afraid, is if you ask and receive an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. You'll drink sugar and then have your blood sugar monitored for several hours. If she tests you at 1 hour, based on your home readings, you should be sky high.

  9. Rajinder - Every one says that for losing weight one must burn more calories then one eats.

    All focus on either eating less or burning more. Strangely enough when u eat less ur body heats up initially. After some time there is no energy in the body. So people says eating less is not the final solution. One must eat less but do more exercises. When a person exerts more than he is used to in recent past he gets tired. The result he will rest more or eat more.

    So what is the solution. Those who have seen titanic, would remember that man woman body in touch produces lot of heat. That means it burns lot of calories. A cold a person burns more calories.

    Then u have some people who say that sex act burns lot of calories. But that tires out a person. There is a limit to that as well. Physically as well as emotionally.

    Now start thinking - is it just the sex act that produces hear. I do not think so. Even body contact produces lot of heat. That is not tiring physically of emotionally.

    It could be emotionally. But I wonder whether it has to be body touch by other sex or could be even contact with the person of same sex.

    May be the heat is generated even when ur own body touches other parts of the body.

    I think that is true.

    So to burn more calories one may try sleeping without putting on clothes. Wearing pants or shirts may cause the body parts not touching other body part.

    By when u are not wearing anything but are safe under suitable mattresses or quilts ur body parts are in touch. When u are sleeping u can burn more calories.

    That will teach u to master ur body better over a period of time.

    U can eat what u feel like and burn those excess calories without tiring urself. May be u are fresh and more energetic in the morning when u get up to burn more calories.
