Smoking Effects On My Body?

396545116 my father has amoked for over 45 years, and continues to and he is one of the healthiest people i know, and he smokes about half a pack a day. Other people in my family have smoked for years and seem to be healthy.. Do genetics play a role in getting cancer from tobacco?

  1. Eliot K - Yes, genetics play a role.

Usually people who smoke stink really bad, and have wrinkly skin and tell-tale lines radiating from the lips. Also, their pee is full of carcinogens. But, if your family doesn't smell bad from the smoke, and all of his biopsies have been negative, then you are in luck.

My mom doesn't smoke, she's 98 and she teaches dancing three days a week. She only stopped driving after she turned 98.

  2. izzy - I think genetics must play a part.
My husband smoked and died at the age of 42 - ca lung.
His mother didn't smoke, died in her late 60s - Lung cancer again.

"Even though the role of heredity in lung cancer is not as well-known, having a family history of lung cancer does increase our risk to some degree. Hereditary lung cancer is higher in women, nonsmokers and those with early onset lung cancer (lung cancer that occurs before the age of 60)."

Just read Eliot K, a remarkable mom. Good genes in his family!

  4. simon - Yes genetics do play a role. Some people can smoke heavily for many years and never get cancer, but then they could get heart disease instead and have a stroke leaving them totally disabled, some people can smoke and have no health problems at all, but that is the minority. No one knows how resistant to smoking diseases they are and if you dont smoke you will be much more healthier. The advice is don't smoke at all, its a waste of money and there are better things to do with your money.
