  2. McGee - Acidity in the body is caused by dehydration - a salt deficiency, to be exact.

Dehydration turns the cells and blood acidic. One of salt's main functions is to remove toxins from the cells that turn the body acidic.

At 60 years old "she" is probably quite dehydrated. Everyone starts losing their perception of thirst at around the age of 20. Slowly, it diminishes over the years until by the time we reach an advanced age, it is almost non-existent. This is why the elderly seem to have more health problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer and the ones you describe - because they're chronically dehydrated.

Unless she's in a position where immediate intervention is necessary to stabilize a serious condition, medication is usually not necessary. All that is necessary is to increase the water intake and correct her dehydration.

Thirst is not a reliable indicator to know when to drink water. As explained, thirst gradually diminishes and the person doesn't feel thirsty. But this doesn't mean that the body doesn't still need the water - it does. By the time you feel thirsty, the effects of dehydration are already affecting somewhere in the body.

Water should be drank on a forced, regular schedule. as outlined through the link below.

In addition to water, salt is also a vital nutrient needed to maintain proper health. Water and salt are two of the three most important nutrients the body needs to survive. Inadequate levels of either of these will cause health problems.
