Ggg Hhh - Generally I would say sugar, as sugar alternatives usually have a lot of artificial additives in them that are quite unhealthy. However, sugar alternatives are more suitable for diabetics as they have to limit the amount of sugar they consume and using sugar alternatives does not affect their blood sugar levels.
Alex - Sugar is really bad for ageing and age-related diseases. Plus, real sugar is not used much in the food supply- high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is used as a subsitute since it is cheaper. Sugar and HFCS increases risk for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension etc. It also promotes abdominal obesity.
Sugar alternatives: depends on which one. Aspartame and Saccharin are controversial for the potential health impacts (e.g. mostly cancer, but recent evidence has linked aspartame to heart disease). Most diet sodas contain aspartame.
Splenda is arguably the safest of all the artificial sweeteners, with a pretty solid safety record. The Center for Science in the Public Interest reviews a lot of food additives. http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm
Josh - thats like debating which poison is better to take. if im guessing i would say sugar is worse for you that just about any other non calorie sweetener. i would avoid both.
