Novolog To Regular Insulin Conversion? Lantus To N Conversion?

396545384 I am an insulin dependent diabetic and was curious about what I would do to convert Novolog and Lantus doses into R/N doses.

When you mention “N” you do not specify Humulin N or Novolin N. Humulin N and Novolin N have a peak action rate of four to 12 hours after injection, depending on the patient and the dose. The main difference between the two is that Humulin has a longer-acting time of up to 24 hours, while Novolin tends to be effective up to 12 hours. R stands for Regular which is a short acting insulin and N for Isophane, (NPH), which is an intermediate-acting insulin that starts working about 1.5 hours after it is injected. You state that you are using NovoLog, which is a fast-acting insulin. Lantus is long-acting insulin. These insulins typically provide baseline control of blood glucose levels. You make no information available for the reason why you wish to change from a short acting and a long acting insulin to those that you name. You should be aware that you should not change the type of insulin you use unless told to do so by your health care provider, and most importantly - Do not mix NovoLog with any other insulins when used in a pump or with any insulins other than NPH when used with injections by syringe. You should seek advice from your doctor or clinic, not in a forum where you have no idea of the accuracy or qualifications of the author, especially when the answer may affect your life.

ALL ANSWERS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED, IN ANY FORUM AND ESPECIALLY IN THIS ONE. - MANY ANSWERS ARE FLAWED.

  2. zuzi - So, your question is Novolog is to Regular and Lantus is to NPH? I do this sometimes when I run out of my Humalog and/or Lantus. Its not the best thing to do because Novolog and Lantus insulin is much better. Its such a balance and so hard to do! I know!!
You have to take into consideration many factors. One, Novolog works faster and is shorter in duration than Regular. Lantus works longer than NPH. Lantus gets injected every 24hrs and NPH gets injected every 12hrs. Also, your activity and caloric intake vary.
Try cutting your long term insulin in half but take it twice per day and your short term insulin in half as well and taking it less often. The key is to check your blood sugars often - to see how you are responding. Go back to Lantus and Novolog as soon as possible. Good Luck and Good Health!
