  2. Carole - Her body doesn't manufacture it's own insulin, she needs the insulin injections to properly digest sugars and starches.

  3. micksmixxx - If Lucy is only injecting twice a day, she MAY actually be a type 2 diabetic as it's normal for a type 1 diabetic to inject prior to each meal ... unless she is going through what's termed the "honeymoon phase" or "honeymoon period" where the remaining beta cells (islets of Langerhans) of her pancreas are still producing some insulin. (The insulin that Lucy is taking MAY also be a mixture of two insulins ... one that's fast-acting and the other that is medium- or long-acting.)

The reason insulin injections are normally taken before meals is because it takes a small amount of time, dependent on the type(s) of insulin being used, before they reach their potential. i.e. it takes time before it gets absorbed from the fatty tissues into the bloodstream, where it starts to do it's job.

Here are a few websites to get you started, my friend, but there are many hundreds, if not thousands of websites to do with diabetes mellitus out there. (Sorry, I could only place 10 sites in the Sources box below.)
