How To Bring Up Low Sodium Level?

396545384 My grandma was diagnosed with low sodium. I did some research and found that not drinking a lot of water helps. But are there any foods that can bring up a healthy sodium level back in her body? She is already on medication from a doctor for sodium levels.

  1. RN851 - Hello Bushan...Hyponatremia (low sodium) is often a sign that there is a pathological process going on within the body. Hopefully your gma's doctor has done work ups to detect what that might be. In any event it is not a great idea to restrict her intake of water. The drug being given to her takes some time to be effective. Be patient and let her physician be your guide. Foods with high sodium are everywhere (pizza, pretzels, hot dogs, processed foods).Feeding her lots of these foods might lead to other difficulties. Whatever you do it is important that her sodium not be raised in a rapid fashion. If sodium levels shift rapidly brain damage can occur.Good Luck!

  2. Cammie - It depends upon why she has a low sodium level.
I have the same problem and am not suppose to drink water. I do drink one glass in the am then on to diet soda with sodium in it.
I have addison's disease. This is common of people with this disease.
It is pretty easy to get used to salting everything and eating high sodium foods.
