Moh Surgery On My Shin?

396545116 I had a squamous cell cancer removed frm my shin a few months ago and it is back. Now they said if I go back to the same doctore I will have to wear a cast for 6 weeks. If I do the moh procedure then I wont have to and can walk right away also with a synthetic skin graft. I dont know why the moh procedure I wouldnt need a cast and the other I would. Help, does anyone know the difference?

  1. curator - Because with the Mohs procedure they only take what they have to and not any extra skin for assurance purposes. They look at the skin right away with frozen sections so that they stop cutting as soon as the edges are cancer free.

  2. Belliger - Hello,

I agree with Curator, the difference is in the amount of skin removed, and hence in the size of the hole which needs to be plugged afterwards. A Moh's procedure is where they remove the skin tumor bit by bit, and each bit is examined immediately under the microscope. When the microscope examination is clear, (no more cancer cells), they stop removing any more skin.

I am not sure whether the 'cast' idea, means they are thinking of doing a cross-leg flap? Or whether the cast is just to protect the skin, whilst the bigger hole heals in, from inside upwards?

    I hope this helps.
