I'm Getting Separators In An Hour Before Braces Next Week, Do They Hurt? Help!?

396545381 I'm getting separators in an hour and having them in till the 12th, which is when i have braces . I'm really scared of pain, do they hurt more than braces? Do they hurt when they're putting them in? How long after they put them in until you start to feel pain?
I'm really scared , please help.

Also, when i get braces, if you know any useful tips and rules, please tell me :)

  2. Rhianna - Dont be scared of the pain, sure the throughout the whole process of braces your mouth will hurt, but in the end it'll be worth it ! :) i mean the pain is not bad at all, if you think its bad you can always take a pain killer like Advil but im sure you wont need it. Spacers they hurt abit when the dentist first puts them in, eventually by tom. the pain will be gone sure the spacers will still be there, but the pain wont :) they hurt a little when the put them in because the stick it between your teeth right, as soon as they put them in, you'll feel a little ache in your mouth but you'll be fine. TRUST ME! there is nothing to be scared of :)) and when you get braces some tips are brush you teeth every night and morning, dont chew hard hard things, no gum. thats about it. hoped i helped: )

  3. Alice Fernandes - I remember when I got seperators all my friends told me they hurt like hell. When I got them they didn't hurt at all. It depends from person to person if they'll hurt.
For the braces, just remember that the first week is the worst. During that time eat soft things like soup, ice cream, mash potatoe, jello, pudding, soft fish etc. If the dentist tells you to brush 3 times a day BRUSH 3 TIMES A DAY! I didn't and I almost got stains from the braces; now I brush 3 times a day and I'm fine. Also, make sure you get all the bits of food out from between the braces. Normally when you get braces they don't hurt on the first day but the day after that they're awful. I advise that on the second day you take Advil if they are bothering you. Try to keep your mind off the pain by doing other things.
Lastly, there's going to be a list if things you can't eat, if you're careful though you can eat most of them. EXCEPT for taffy, sugar gum (always eat sugar free gum with braces) and caramel. Also don't crunch hard candy (like lollipops) only suck them otherwise you can do MAJOR damage.

    Best of luck :)

  4. Belle - for me, the spacers didn't hurt in the slightest. braces however..different story. the day you first get them on and a couple days after, it hurt so bad. i couldn't even eat a banana :/ but the braces will never, for the rest of the time you have braces, hurt as bad as those first days. you will have appointments for tightening the braces and such, and your mouth will hurt again, but it's not as bad. plus, the longer you have the braces, the less it starts to hurt when you get them tightened because your teeth are getting straighter and straighter. i'm sure your orthodontist will brief you on your braces when you get them on, but my personal advice - wear the rubber bands!! because if you don't, it'll just take longer and longer to get them off. also, make sure you brush really well and floss because if you don't, you could have traintracks (when you get them off, the space of tooth where the bracket was, will be lighter than the rest of the tooth). they'll stress what kinds of foods to eat when you get them on, and definitely listen. i doubt your parents would be very happy if you broke a wire or bracket because you were eating popcorn or crunching ice or eating gummi candies. last piece of advice: even though it's probably far down the road, when you get them off, WEAR THOSE RETAINERS. i have friends who payed 4,000+ dollars for braces and then didn't wear their retainers so their teeth went back. so yeah, definitely wear the retainers and listen to your orthodontist.

  5. hannahbanana - Yeah I'm sorry to say that they will will hurt quite a lot when you get the separators. It might feel a little bit painful when he first puts them in but a few hours later it will hurt a lot more. Its bearable though with some painkillers which I recommend you take just before you get them on.
Don't worry to much because its only a week. Eat before you go. And afterwards just eat soft food at first but the quicker you start to chew with them the better they will feel but it will be too painful to eat with them at first.
Braces will be the same but a little bit less painful but for about a week. Use the wax they give you if it starts rubbing and only eat soft foods.
    Hope that helps
