my friend was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year. Since then she has been having a difficult time as she can't eat what she wants to eat. When she eats she vomits the food out and so therefore have to be force fed. she faints sometimes and so has to be admitted to the hospital. i feel so sad but i don't know what i can say to cheer her up. please give me some advice~ thank you!!
Hannah Miles - I know how you feel, my sister and my friend were diagnosed in the same month. Don't feel different around her. Act the same you did before, go out for a meal or something with her, as long as she has the right amount of insulin, she should be able to eat something that she likes, you just have to find what that is. The one thing is won't want to do is talk about it, so distract her but still let her know your there for her and brighter days will come! Hope this helps.
ReplyDeletePaula - It depends on your friend's sense of humor. My friends and I would probably joke about it, "Hey how about a nice bowl of X (something we shouldn't eat)." Or if she's gloom and doom, remind her of the positives, a healthy diet, will mean a healthier life, it's something "new" that she can learn about? Maybe become a motivator herself for those learning how to live a lifestyle they didn't see coming.
