Daily Heart Palpitations?

396545385 I have daily heart palpitations.. which in this case means my heart will start beating really fast for a few seconds, or up to a couple minutes then go back to regular and usually it will result in a rush to my head (a lot of blood flow I assume) which, results in a very very small amount of light headedness. That's not the problem though. Basically I am just a little worried about it being a daily type of thing. It happened one night for about 10 minutes straight so the next morning we went to the ER and I had my blood taken and tested and they said everything was perfectly fine. They also gave me a heart monitor for 24 hours and said they will tell us if there are any problems. They never got back to us so that means they didn't see anything wrong. The doctors said everything was fine but it doesn't seem normal to have them daily, by normal I guess I mean safe.. obviously it's not normal. There have never been negative effects from it so far.. so.. i don't know. I guess I would just like some other people's opinions.

Also the doctor said some people just have them and it's not dangerous or anything. Mine have started happening a little more often since the doctor's though. Before it used to be every couple days, now it's nearly every day. One bad thing on my part is the doctor said to avoid caffeine, more specifically soda and coffee. Those are the two things I drink most often.. lol. So since then I have continued regular use of those.

One last thing is that I'm a little overweight and I have kind of noticed a pattern, where after eating some unhealthy stuff, maybe like chips or something the palpitations might start happening. I'm 6 feet tall and about 250 pounds. I just started a diet yesterday and I'm going to the gym in a half hour. I'm curious that maybe after losing some weight and being healthier that it will stop or occur less often.

Thanks a lot for any serious answer, it's much appreciated.
Also I am usually pretty stressed because of school and my mom and stuff, although it's not too bad.
I don't smoke or drink alcohol either.

  1. Abby - There are many different reasons for palpitations. One important thing that you did not note is your age. Heart palpitations can be due to hormone imbalance, structural heart problems, medications, drugs, stress etc... There are a variety of causes. Be sure to check that your doctor has a copy of your 24 hour Holter monitor report as sometimes these types of tests do get lost in limbo between the primary doc and an ER. If you haven't had blood work, you should discuss having labs checked with your doctor. No one here can tell you why you are having these or if diet/exericse will help because really there are many different types of palpitations and abnormal rhythms. See your primary doctor and avoid the caffeine.
